Spanish No.2 David Ferrer is pondering withdrawing from Indian Wells following his shock defeat at the Mexicano Open.
The 33-year-old, who is the top seed in this week’s Mexicano Open, suffered a straight sets defeat to Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round. The Spaniard only managed to win 35% of his total return points and was broken three times during his 6-4, 6-4, defeat.
After playing in six tournaments this year, Ferrer has failed to progress beyond the quarterfinals at all of them. Prior to Mexico, the world No.8 lost in the quarterfinals of the Rio Open to the inform Austrian Dominic Thiem. Ferrer was the defending champion at the Brazilian tournament.
Following his Mexican disappointment, Ferrer has revealed that he might skip the Indian Wells Masters in two weeks time. The 33-year-old told local media that he will travel back to Valencia to think about playing in the first Masters tournament of this year. He explained that he is considering withdrawing due to tiredness.
“I do not know what to do the next few weeks. I’ll go home and I am not sure if I will play in Indian Wells or not, because I’ve traveled a lot, I played a lot and there are times in life that you need to stop and enjoy it.” The 33-year-old said.
“Everything in life is tennis and now I’m at a time in which I think I want to enjoy what I have gained in my life.” He later added.
Since 2003, Ferrer has only missed the Indian Wells tournament once, which was in 2014 due to a leg injury. He has never chosen to purposely skip the prestigious tournament in his entire career. His best performance at the venue was in 2007 when he reached the quarterfinals.
After making the unexpected announcement, Ferrer was asked about retirement. During an interview last September, the world No.8 said that he planned to play for ‘two or three more years’. On the other hand, his response in Mexico regarding the topic was a lot more sombre.
“I do not plan my future; I consider the present and short term”. Ferrer concluded.
