Novak Djokovic would have done the same thing. If his first child was born the day he was supposed to play in a Grand Slam final, the Serb would have dropped his chances, flew to Monte Carlo and be with his wife to assist to his child’s birth. Just what Andy Murray plans on doing in Melbourne if Kim Sears – pregnant with the couple’s first child – gives birth while the Brit is playing at the Australian Open. What if it was the final? Still no chance Andy would miss the birth of his first child, even if that meant running to catch a plain to Britain with no sleep and having to drop out of a major final.

Murray’s choice was publicly backed by Novak Djokovic in Melbourne this week, when the World No.1 met with the media for the first time since arriving back to Australia, where he will be once again defending champion.

Obviously I agree with Andy and his choice. I would have done the same thing” said Novak with a smile.

The Serb last year lived his best season to date, both off and on court. After his first son Stefan was born in 2014, Novak entered 2015 with the perfect balance he needed to feel confident he could win almost every match on court. And that is mostly what happened throughout the past 12 months in tennis.

In Melbourne Novak will be bidding to win a historical 5th title, tying Roy Emerson (who won six titles before the Open Era) in the all-time list of most titles players at the Australian Open.

2015 has been the best season of my career” confirmed Novak, who said he hopes to take the confidence he developed with all the wins into the new season, to continue performing at his best. To those who asked him if he was thinking to complete the calendar Grand Slam this year, after finishing one match shy of the feat last year (Novak lost the French Open final to Stan Wawrinka) Novak said it is too early in the season to already think about that.

In his first round in Melbourne, Novak will play against 1996-born Hyeon Chung, praised by the Serb as one of the future stars of men’s tennis.
