Ninth-seed Karolina Pliskova overcame a tight first set by winning the tie-break 7-5 before cruising to 6.1 in the second set to seal the win over German Julia Georges in the late-night match at the Australian Open. Pliskova and Georges traded breaks in the second and the third games of the opening set before the German saved three break points. Pliskova got three mini-breaks to Georges’ 2 to earn two set points. The Czech player converted her second chance to seal the first set after 63 minutes
Pliskova got a doble break in the second and in the sixth games to cruise to 6-1 in the second set.
Pliskova hit 13 aces and dominated the match from the baseline. She made 17 unforced errors to Georges’ 37.
Pliskova, who has not advanced beyond the third round at Grand Slam level yet, will face last year’s Australian Open semifinalist Ekaterina Makarova who beat Tatyana Maria 6-4 6-2.
“I am really happy to win but it’s always tough to play against a friend on court. It wasn’t easy to win, but I am just happy to make it to round three”, said Pliskova
