Sharp pains in her left foot forced Garbiñe Muguruza to retire from her opening match in Brisbane. The Spaniard was 7-6, 1-0 down against Varvara Lepchenko when she decided enough was enough after an hour and twenty five minutes on court.
Just like Serena Williams, who also pulled out of the Hopman Cup this week, Muguruza didn’t show too many signs of being worried about the injury ahead of the Australian Open in two weeks: “I’m not too worried. It’s a kind of pain which you sometimes feel in your foot when you start competing and running”.
The world number three, now working under Sam Sumyk, claimed that the pain was “increasing” but she expects to be back to full fitness “in a couple of days”.
