As the new tennis season approaches, fans will be hoping that there will be a fresh face ready to make his name on the ATP Tour. There are currently 16 players ranked inside the top 300 under the age of 19, four of which are ranked inside the top 100. Ubitennis has picked out some of the young players to keep an eye on during 2016.
Borna Coric
Croatia’s Borna Coric has been labelled as a future star by various individuals over the past couple of years. At 44th in the world he is the highest ranked teenager in the top 100. Coric has demonstrated how much potential he has with wins over Rafael Nadal at the 2014 Swiss Indoors and Andy Murray at this year’s Dubai International. The Croats ability is unquestionable, but his consistency is the issue.
This year Coric has reached the semifinal at two tournaments on the ATP Tour (Dubai, UAE and Nice, France). He also participated in one Challenger event this year in Barranquilla, Colombia. It was at that event where Coric grabbed his only title this year after defeating Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva in straight sets. Since his Colombian Success in September, Coric ended the year in disappointment with just two match wins out of five tournaments played.
Coric will start 2016 with his new coach Miles Maclagan. British-born Maclagan has previously worked with a string of high profile players including Andy Murray, Laura Robson and Sam Stosur. During a recent interview with Sportske Novosti, Coric revelled two of his main goals for the 2016 season.
“My first ATP title is certainly one of the goals, also I have already announced that I wanted to get into the Top 30. We will work hard for it and soon we will see how feasible”. Coric said.
The Croat will be the 8th seed at the Chennai Open, which starts on January 4th. He will be hoping to put behind a disastrous end to 2015. Coric certainly has the talent to be amongst the best. The biggest mission for him in 2016 will be if he is able to utilize the skills he has on the main tour.
