Serena Williams has been voted the AIPS Women’s Best Athlete of the Year for 2015. A panel of 91 journalists from all over the world voted in this year’s poll. Williams continued her dominance on the world tennis stage winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the French Open and two more titles in Miami and Cincinnati. She won a total of 21 Grand Slam titles in her career and was also voted Sports Personality of the Year by Sports Illustrated. Serena received 664 votes beating 1500m world record holder and world champion Genzebe Dibaba, who finished second in the poll with 362 votes, and Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers, world champion in the 200m and world silver in the 100m in Beijing, who got 283 points. Serena has won the AIPS Best Female title for the fourth year in a row.
Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt, gold medallist in the 100m, 200m and the 4×100 relay at the World Championships in Beijing, was voted the AIPS Men’s Best Athlete of the Year. The 11-time world champion and 6-time Olympic champion received 804 points beating Serbian tennis super star Novak Djokovic who finished runner-up in the poll with 774 votes.
