
Serena Williams has dismissed any suggestion that she lacked willingness to play on the tour following her crushing loss in the semifinals of the US Open.
The world No.1 was on course to become the first woman to win all four Grand Slam titles within a year since Steffi Graf back in 1988. The American was two matches away from the historic accomplishment before suffering a shock defeat to Roberta Vinci in Flushing Meadows. Shortly after her loss, it was confirmed that Williams will not play the remainder of the 2015 season so that she can address her ‘health issues’.
Williams returned to action last week at a Danish exhibition event against Caroline Wozniacki where she lost in straight sets. The lack of match play has clearly affected the world No.1’s performance. Playing in this years IPTL, the American currently tops the leader board with the highest number of double faults (10) and unforced errors (73). Speaking about the extent of her injury during a press conference in the Philippines, Williams has reiterated that she never lacked motivation this year.
“I never lacked motivation. I just was really injured” She told reporters in the Philippine capital on Sunday.
“I’ve always been motivated, so I just had to get better — you know, be able to just walk without being in pain.”
Speaking about her participation in the unique Asian exhibition event, the 21-time Grand Slam champion said that she is in good shape ahead of next months Australian Open.
“It’s good to back here”. The world No.1 said.
“It’s a good opportunity for me to get some more tennis in and get ready. I felt really good.”
The world No.1 will kick off her 2016 season at the Hopman Cup where she will partner Jack Sock. Williams has won the title twice before in 2003 (with James Blake) and 2008 (with Mardy Fish).
