Roger Federer made a comment on the next Olympic Games where he will team up with Martina Hingis in the mixed doubles.
“I am really excited to be playing with Martina 15 years later at the Rio Games”, said Federer on Twitter.
Federer played alongside Hingis at the 2001 Hopman Cup. Federer, who is a year younger than Hingis, won the singles silver in London 2012 (losing to Andy Murray in the final) and the doubles gold with Stan Wawrinka in Beijing 2008.
Hingis won five Grand Slam singles titles but never won an Olympic medal. The Swiss star came out of retirement for the second time in 2013 and has focused on doubles since then. She won the Wimbledon and US Open (and the WTA Finals doubles titles alongside her partner Sania Mirza.
“I looked up to her when I was younger. I thought she was the most unbelievable talent. She is almost my age and she was winning Grand Slams while I was still at the national centre and I couldn’t believe how good she was. ”, said Federer.
“I have always said that the Olympic Games are very important for me. Every Olympic Games has been a super amazing experience, an eye-opener, a great learning curve for me. Seeing other athletes, getting inspired and motivated, carrying the flag is such a proud moment in my career and my life as a person. To have done twice for Switzerland in Athens and Beijing was incredible”.
