Despite finishing the year as the second highest ranked Swiss player. Stan Wawrinka has come out on top at the Swiss Sports Awards.
This year Wawrinka stunned Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open to clinch his second Grand Slam title. The 30-year-old has also claimed three titles on the ATP Tour in Chennai, Rotterdam and Tokyo with a win-loss this season of 55-18. He is only the second male tennis player to receive the reward after Roger Federer, who has won the title on six previous occasions.
The first and second round results placed Wawrinka at the top, followed by Federer in second. In the second round of voting Wawrinka extended his voting percentage by almost 10% to 38.91%, 16.1% more than second place Federer.
“This award is very touching for me. I am proud to be yet again part of this magnificent Swiss sports year“. Wawrinka said after accepting his award.
Despite falling short in the awards, Federer is currently ranked higher and has won more awards than his fellow countryman. The 34-year-old has won six titles in 2015 including his record breaking eighth title in Halle and seventh title in Cincinnati. He was also a finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open, losing to world No.1 Novak Djokovic on both occasions.
In the women’s section of the awards, world No.12 Timea Bacsinszky came third. The 26-year-old have won two WTA titles in Mexico this year and reached the semifinals at the French Open. Her run to the final of the China Open in October, elevated Bacsinszky inside the top 10 for the first time in her career.
