The Olympic Tennis centre in Rio De Janeiro has finally been completed and successfully hosted its inaugural event in preparation for the Summer Olympics.
A Brazil Mastercup event consisting of five categories took place, and the event was attended by some former stars of Brazilian tennis. Brazil’s best players from the mens and singles games were present in the form of 19-time Grand Slam winner Maria Esther Bueno and three time Roland Garros winner Gustavo Kuerten.
Kuerten speaking to the press at the event “It makes me want to play again. Imagine what it’s going to be like next year – we’re going to put on a great tennis show.It is a very important development, for the attention that the Olympics will bring and because we will now have facilities of this level for our players“.
The announcement that the tennis centre is complete will come as major relief to Olympic organisers, as Brazil struggles to complete other venues in the wake of an economic crisis.
Meanwhile many players have already outlined their commitments to the Rio Games including Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer, who is still to win the singles Gold Medal, despite winning the Doubles Gold with Wawrinka in Beijing 2008 and the Singles Silver in London 2012.
