Novak Djokovic has been named the European Sportsperson of the Year for the second tie in his career after another sensational year in which he won three Grand Slam titles (Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open), the ATP Finals in London and Masters 1000 (Indian Wells, Miami, Montecarlo, Rome, Shanghai and Paris Bercy) and the ATP 500 in Beijing. The Serbian World Number 1 player won this year’s edition of the Polish Press Agency for the best European male and female athletes of the year. Djokovic received 199 votes and was followed by Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton (139 votes) and 200m World champion Dafne Schippers (79 votes).
The winner was announced on Saturday by the Polish Press Agency, which organizes the award. Journalists from 22 European news agencies cast their votes. In the past other tennis stars won this award: Steffi Graf twice in 1988 and 1989, Stefan Edberg in 1990, Martina Hingis in 1997, Roger Federer five times in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009, Rafa Nadal twice in 2008 and 2010.
