Switzerland is going to have a WTA International Tournament starting from February 2017 in Biel in a newly-built tennis hall when the Swiss tennis Federation is located at the Roger Federer’s Street. They are buiying the rights to the tournament from Florianapolis. The new tournament could be played in February after Doha.
Switzerland enjoyed a great 2015 season thanks to Belinda Bencic, Timea Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis. Bencic won her first two WTA titles at Eastbourne and Toronto. In the Canadian tournament Bencic beat Serena Williams in the semifinal and Simona Halep in the final. At Wimbledon she reached the fourth round before losing to Vika Azarenka in straight sets. She beat Angelique Kerber and Flavia Pennetta in the first two rounds at Cincinnati before being forced tp retire against Lucie Safarova in the third round. Bencic lost in the third round at the US Open to Venus Williams after going up a break in the second set. She reached the final in Tokyo during the autumn Asian Swing.
Bacsinszky beat Petra Kvitova in the semifinal before losing to Simona Halep in the final at Shenzhen in the first tournament of the year. The Lausanne player reached the third round at the Australian Open before winning two consecutive titles at Acapulco and Monterrey beating Caroline Garcia in both finals.
Bacsinszky reached the quarter finals at Indian Wells where she beat Ekaterina Makarova before losing to Serena Williams in the quarter finals. Timea beat Petra Kvitova en route to reaching the third round in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career. She went on to reach the semifinals in the French Open where she lost to Serena Williams after leading by a set and a break. She reached the quarter finals at Williams and her first Premier Mandatory final at the China Open in Beijing where she lost to Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.
Martina Hingis won seven doubles tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Wimbledon, US Open, Guangzhou and WTA Finals in Singapore with her Indian partner Sania Mirza and two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles with Leander Paes from India.
