Former British Number 1 player Laura Robson feels optimistic that she will put her injury nightmare behind her after playing just eight tournaments this summer after being sidelined for one year and a half after undergoing wrist surgery. Robson lost 6-3 3-6 5-7 to Alena Vesnina in the first round of the US Open. However she started feeling pain in her left hand again last September after the US Open.

After taking three months off after the US Open Robson feels confident that she will make her come-back next year in 2016.

“The hardest part was from a couple of weeks before the US Open when I started feeling pain again. That really sucked. It was pain where it was going on and off. I didn’t know what it was and I didn’t tell anyone about it for a while because I didn’t want to go through that whole processa gain. So after New York when it was more on and off and saw my surgeon again and fixed it all up. Buti t was a tough few weeks there. Being in the brace again was just awful. It’s definitely been a long process and it’s not over. There is a lot of work to put in. It’s going to be a long way back. ”, said Robson.

Robson took the tough decision not to play at the Australian Open and will return next February in smaller tournaments with the target to return to the WTA Tour next March at Indian Wells. She used the protected ranking to play at the US Open and will be able to use it at only one more Grand Slam tournament. She will attempt to make a gradual return to form in the early months before using the protected ranking at the french Open. The protected ranking is given to players who suffer long-term injuries.

“I get two Slams with my protected ranking. One I used in New York. I figured I would get as many matches behind me as possible and use the second one in Paris”, said Robson.

British Number 2 Heather Watson, who won the WTA Title in Hobart earlier this year, has split from her coach Diego Veronelli after a two-year partnership. The coach from Argentina moved from florida back to Buenos Aires to stay with his young family.

Robson, who is ranked World Number 55, was just two points away from beating Serena Williams in the third round at Wimbledon and reached the quarter finals at Hong Kong last October where she lost to Samantha Stosur.
