Garbine Muguruza will play in the inaugural edition of the WTA Mallorca Open from the 11th to the 19th June 2016. The 2015 Wimbledon finalist will play in the first ever WTA grass court tournament on Spanish soil.
Muguruza said at the official press conference to launch the new tournament that Mallorca will provide a perfect preparation for her ahead of Wimbledon where she will defend the final of 2015 when she lost to Serena Williams.
Muguruza is bidding to become the first Spanish woman to win at Wimbledon since Conchita Martinez upset nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova in 1994.
“It’s always very special to compete in a tournament on home soil. I am very happy to be part of the first edition of the Mallorca Open next year”, said Muguruza.
“We are very proud to present a strong field in the first edition with Garbine Muguruza in the lead plus other international top players. This guarantees a highly attractive programme for tourists and residents of the island, especially with the night sessions”, said Mallorca CEO Tournament Edwin Weindorfer.
