Stan Wawrinka, this year’s Roland Garros champion, beat Bernard Tomic 6-3 7-6 (8-6) in one hour and 32 minutes to advance to the third round of the BNP Paribas in Paris Bercy. Wawrinka broke serve once in the first set to take the first set before saving a set point at 5-6 in the second set.
Tomic won their only previous head-to-head match in the 2011 Davis Cup Play-Off.
Wawrinka broke serve on Tomic’s first service game and held his serve until the end of the first set to win 6-3. Tomic earned two set points at 6-5 in the second set but Wawrinka saved them to force the set to the tie-break. The Lausanne star rallied from 2-5 down in the tie-break by reeling off six of the next seven points (including four points in a row) to win the breaker with 8-6.
Wawrinka fended off all the break points he faced and fired 13 aces. In the third round he will face either Viktor Toicki or Feliciano Lopez.
In the first round match Viktor Troicki beat last week’s Basel semifinalist Jack Sock 6-2 6-3.
