Serena Williams will face Caroline Wozniacki for the Energi Denmark Champions Battle, an exhibition match in Herning next Thursday. The two super-stars met the Danish press ahead of the event.
Williams will make her return to the court less than three months after her shock defeat against Roberta Vinci in the semifinal of the US Open. Williams will make her second consecutive appearance in Herning one year after playing against Ana Ivanovic.
Willams beat Wozniacki in the 2014 US Open final.
“I have been looking forward to visiting Herning again. I had such a great playing here last year, so when I had the chance to come here with Caroline I said yes right away”, said Williams.
“I have been looking forward to this day for a long time. It’s been three years since I played my last match in Denmark, and playing my good friend Serena here is a dream come true”, said Wozniacki.
Serena and Caroline have developed a close and friendly relationship on the WTA Tour.
“We have been joking that I will follow Caroline around the tour when I finish playing myself. Being in the box, coaching Caroline”, said Williams jokingly
Williams thinks that Wozniacki will finally win her first Grand Slam title in the future. The Danish reached the World Number 1 positition in 2010 and 2011 but has never won at Grand Slam level. The Scandinavian player finished the 2015 season ranked World Number 17, her lowest ranking since 2007. Wozniacki won in Kuala Lumpur and reached the final in Auckland and Stuttgart and the semifinal in Eastbourne and New Haven but lost lost in the second round in three Grand Slams in Melbourne, Paris and New York and in the fourth round at Wimbledon (losing to finalist Garbine Muguruza).
“Caroline has even been able to be Number 1 in the world for more than one year. That should something to put more focus on rather than to note that she has not yet won a Grand Slam tournament. I think Caroline can win Grand Slam tournaments in the future. She is still very young. She still has a great chance to do everything she can to win not just one but many Grand Slams. Tennis is an interesting game. You see players who sometimes perform extremely well, and you never know what can happen. Caroline is at a level where there are so many good players, including herself”.
