World No.60 Sam Groth has ended 2015 on a high note after being awarded the prestigious Newcombe Medal.
The Newcome Medal is an annual award given to Australian players in recognition of their performance, achievements and contributions throughout the season. Groth was one of six players nominated for the award this year. Other nominees included Sam Stosur and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
There was controversy regarding this year’s nomination’s when Australia’s two highest ranked male players, Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios, wasn’t shortlisted. The reason for the duo to not make the shortlist was because of their antics off the court. In 2015 Tomic became the highest ranked player on the ATP Tour since Lleyton Hewitt back in 2008.
Despite the omission of Tomic and Kyrgios, winner Groth has enjoyed a breakthrough season. In August the 28-year-old achieved his career ranking high of 53rd in the world (currently he is 60th). Groth has won two Challenger titles this season in Taipei and Manchester. The Narrandera-born player also produced his best year at Grand Slam tournaments by reaching the third round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Groth was presented the award by 7-time Grand Slam champion John Newcombe. The 71-year-old spoke highly about Groth after presenting him with his medal.
“Sam’s done exceptionally well,” Newcome said.
“He’s a tough competitor out there now. The guys hate playing him, someone who serve-volleys all the time and has some big weapons.”
After receiving his medal, Groth spoke about what the medal means to him in a video posted on the Tennis Australia website.
