Bopanna and Mergea surprise No.3 seed Dodig/Melo by 6-4 6-2 to reach the finals in the doubles draw at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Dodig and Melo are now out the race to close the year as World No.1 in doubles. The Indian/Romanian duo had qualified last minute for the finals.
No.8 seed Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea didn’t qualify until the very last day for a spot in the top 8 teams competing at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. They were assured a spot only on November 8, exactly one week before the official start of the tournament at the O2 Arena.
Now, against all odds, the Indian and the Romanian have qualified for the finals after beating No.3 seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo with the final score of 6-4 6-2 in 59 minutes. A first-year team, the two have now taken off Dodig/Melo from the race to year-end world No.1 in doubles.
At his third visit at the O2 Arena, Bopanna has the 2012 final as his best result, tied today. Mergea is at his first appearance at the year-end championships.
Later in the day Rojer/Tecau will face the Bryan brothers to decide who will finish on top of the men’s doubles ranking this year
