British Davis Cup Leon Smith praised Andy Murray for his huge role in helping Great Britain the Davis Cup final for the first time since 1978. The World Number 2 significantly contributed to the British wins against three big Davis Cup nations USA, France and Australia in the first three rounds of the 2015 Davis Cup.
Murray played on all three days against both France in the quarter finals and Australia in the semifinals winning. In the semifinal against Australia Murray won two singles matches and the doubles
Last March Murray won both his singles matches against Donald Young and Johns Isner helping Great Britain win 3-2 against the USA in Glasgow. Last July Murray teamed up with his brother Jamie to win the doubles match against France in four sets after coming back from a set down at the Queen’s. He then beat Gilles Simon in four sets after coming back from a set and a break down. Murray won his singles matches against Thanasi Kokkinakis and Bernard Tomic and beat Sam Groth and Lleyton Hewitt in five sets in the doubles in the Davis Cup semifinal rubber in Glasgow last September
“We have very fortunate to have one of the very best players in the world. His commitment to the team has been absolutely incredible”, said Leon Smith to the official Davis Cup website
“This year we started with a win against the USA in a tough match. We then played against France, probably the toughest team in the competition with their depth of players and then we had to play against another Grand Slam nation in Australia in the semifinals, so it’s been a tough route to the final. But with Andy winning every rubber that he has played, and in the last two matches he has played all three days, which is very difficult emotionally and physically. It’s put us in a great position”, continued Smith
Leon Smith said that Great Britain would face a very tough task against the home team, who is expected to receive a strong support from the 13000 fans in the Flanders Arena
“It would be foolish to underestimate Belgium. If you look at their team, they have their superstar now in David Goffin who has had a terrific year. He is very dangerous. He is one of the younger players on the tour and he is going to be difficult.”
