Great Britain’s historic achievement in the Davis Cup has gripped the British media by storm, becoming front page news on numerous publications.
Their 3-1 win over Belgium in Ghent has given Britain their 10th Davis Cup title and their first since 1936. The star of the British team was world No.2 Andy Murray, who played in all three of Britain’s wins in the final (two singles matches and a doubles match with his brother Jamie). Murray is the third man in history to produce a win-loss of 8-0 during the Davis Cup in one season. The last player to achieve this was Mats Wilander in 1982. During Great Britain’s press conference (click here to see full transcript) Murray spoke of his delight.
“I probably haven’t been as emotional as that after a match that I’ve won. I’ve been pretty upset having lost matches before. But I’d say that’s probably the most emotional I’ve been after a win”. Murray said after his win over David Goffin on Sunday.
“It’s incredible that we managed to win this competition. I didn’t know that would ever be possible. It’s great”. The world No.2 added.
The monumental achievement by Murray and his team has brought tennis to the front pages of the British media. The last time there was such a substantial media response similar to this was when Murray won the 2013 Wimbledon title.
