Juan Martin Del Potro has been updating the tennis world each time there is a new development in his attempt to return to professional tennis.
Happily, there is another new development. Del Potro has announced that he has begun to hit his first backhands since taking to the court again following his latest wrist surgery. The tall Argentinian posted his update on Twitter.

Despite the positivity from the 2009 US Open champion, no date has yet been set for his return to the Tour, and he has given no indication if he will even be able to play at the Australian Open in January. It will probably be telling whether or not he plays the warm-up events in Sydney or Auckland, as he is unlikely to race back into competitive action at a grand slam tournament without testing the wrist in a smaller event first.
Del Potro’s last event was an attempt at a comeback in Miami, were he suffered a straight sets defeat to Vasek Pospisil. It was only the second of two tournaments that he played in 2013, after reaching the quarter-finals of the Apia International Sydney at the beginning of the year.
