Former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki has sharply responded to criticism of her performance this year during an interview with Danish website TV2.
The 25-year-old ends her season at 17th in the world, her lowest year-end ranking since 2006. Wozniacki has a win-loss this year of 42-23 and has won one title at the WTA Kuala Lumpur Open in March. She was also runner-up at two other tournaments in Auckland, New Zealand and Stuttgart, Germany. Speaking about her season, Wozniacki has brushed off criticism as she looks ahead to next year.
“I do not feel I need to prove anything to anyone. I have been the best in the world and I have won many tournaments. It is clear that when I play, I like to win. There are five major tournaments next year, I would like to do well in”. The world No.17 said.
The five major tournaments Wozniacki was speaking of was the four Grand Slam tournaments as well as the Olympics. Wozniacki has played a top ten player on eight occasions in 2015 with a win-loss of 3-5. Despite her disappointing performance against the best, the Dane still believes that she is ‘one of the best’ players on the tour.
Regardless of the positive attitude from the two-time US Open finalist, it is still concerning for both Wozniacki and her team that she has ended the year at her lowest ranking in almost ten years. As the odds mount against her, the Dane refuses to be down on herself as she thanked her family and fans for their support.
“I have been met with so many things over the years. When I started on the tour, I was told that I never reached the top-100, top-50 or top-30, I have heard this all the way through, so I am not going to be so heavy on myself and I know that I have many fans”. Wozniacki said.
“My family supports me also through thick and thin, so that’s what’s cool, and it means a lot when people come up to me and say they have supported me for many years”.
Wozniacki will kick-off her 2016 season at the ASB Classic in New Zealand on January 4th. It will be her second consecutive appearance at the tournament. This year she reached the final before losing to Venus Williams.
