Andy Murray beat David Ferrer 6-4 6-3 to reach the final in Paris Bercy for the first time in his career after droppng just a set in the whole tournament in yesterday’s quarter final against Rchard Gasquet.
Murray now leads 11-6 in his previous head-to-head matches against Ferrer and won six of his last seven clashes against the Spanish player. Ferrer won this tournament and reached the final in 2013.
Murray got an early break in the opening game and opened up a 3-1 lead in the first set.
Ferrer broke back to draw level to 3-3 after two unforced errors by Murray. The player from Valencia brought up four break points in the 8th game but Murray saved them from 0-40. Murray broke to love in the ninth game for 5-4 after Ferrer made a string of unforced errors. Murray earned a set point with a sliced backhand lob and clinched the first set after Ferrer hit a forehand into the net.
Murray saved three break points at the start of the second set before Ferrer broke to take a 3-1 lead but Murray broke straight back with a winner down the line before holding serve for 3-3. Murray earned another break point with a volley at the net and converted it as Ferrer made a backhand passing shot error.
After holding his serve Murray got his third break of he second set and clinched the win on his first match point as Ferrer hit a drop-shot into the net.
Murray hit 26 winners to just 10 for Ferrer.
Murray is bidding to win his fifth title of the year after Munich, Madrid, Queen’s and Montreal. In the Roger’s Cup in Canada he beat Novak Djokovic, who coul be his rival in tomorrow’s final in the Scotsman beats Stan Wawrinka.
Murray will end the season in second place for the first time in his career if he wins tomorrow’s final
“I played aggressive tennis an was successful at the net. Finishing the season in second place wasn’t my goal at the start of the season. I am really pumped to finish the season as Number 2. It’s more about the seedings at the Australian Open whic can help. If I can do that, it will be the highest I have ever achieved. I have also the Davis Cup to look forward to. I have never played in a Davis Cup final before so I could achieve things I have never done before, which gives me extra motivation”, said Murray
