Novak Djokovic is looking to continue his 17-match winning streak at this week’s BNP Paribas Masters where he is bidding to grab his third consecutive title.
The world No.1 is chasing his 10th title this year in Paris. Success in Paris will mean that Djokovic will win six Masters titles in one season for the first time in his career. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Djokovic hopes that his recent unbeaten record at the French tournament will continue as he eyes a perfect end to the season.
“I haven’t lost a match, the last couple years during the indoor season,” Djokovic said.
“I’ve played only Paris and London (year-end finals) for the last couple years. But still the perfect record that I have in these two tournaments allows me to believe that I can do well.
“I’m not thinking about being unbeaten till the rest of the year. But, yes, that’s an option. It’s a possibility. But I’ll still try to keep the kind of a philosophy and approach where the next match matters.”
This week is Djokovic’s 171st week at the top of the ATP rankings, elevating him to fifth on the all-time list for weeks spend as world No.1. The 28-year-old will need to spend another 132 weeks (two years and 28 weeks) at the top to overtake Roger Federer’s record of 302 weeks.
Djokovic has already enjoyed the best season of his career with three Grand Slam titles and five Masters. During his Paris press conference the World No.1 admitted that if he doesn’t perform well in the final two tournaments of the year, it will not ruin his sensational season. He also spoke about the extra responsibility of being a defending champion in a sport he loves.
“As the No. 1 in the world and defending champion there is an extra responsibility to do well. People watch you play, pay for their tickets. … I love this sport and I have lots of passion to play it.”. He said.
After receiving a first round bye, Djokovic first match will be against either Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci or Russian Lucky Loser Teymuraz Gabashvili.
