Caroline Wozniacki just about survived her opening match at the Generali Ladies Linz after battling past renowned giant killer Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in three tough sets. Wozniacki, on the pack of last sixteen exit in Beijing, had to come back from a set down to book her place in the second round with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 win.
“She’s been playing really well, and she usually plays well against top-ranked players. I just tried to take it one ball at a time and stay positive. It was really close. Sometimes it goes one way and sometimes the other, I’m just happy with this win and happy to be through to the next round”, said the world number eleven who will face Flipkens in the second round.
Roberta Vinci, on the other hand, was surprised as Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic knocked her out in three sets. “It wasn’t my day today. I tried to be aggressive and tried to play more to her backhand but she played well”, said the US Open finalist after her surprising exit.
The other result of the day came in the second round where lucky loser Johann Konta was taken out in straight sets by Madison Brengle.
