The Generali Ladies Linz got underway today in Austria with two first round encounters and a host of doubles matches and final qualifying rounds.
The final 32 women draw is set and we will have a new winner as defendin champion, Karolina Pliskova is not in this year’s draw.
Anna-Lena Friedsam pulled off the first shock of the day by defeating Magdalena Rybarikova relatively easily 6-3, 6-3. The second upset came as Margarita Gasparyan, who won the title in Baku in July, defeated word number 57 Carina Witthoeft in three sets.
And keeping with the mood of upsets, Johann Konta, who had been in unstoppable form of late fell in the finaly qualifying round against Klara Koukalova.
The top quality action continues tomorrow in Linz with Julia Goerges v Camila Giorgi and Andrea Petkovic v Johanna Larsson the highlights of an action-packed day of tennis.
