World No.3 Roger Federer will play in an exhibition match next year in Mexico at the Plaza de Torres.
According to a report by ESPN Desportes, the match will take place on March 5th in the build up to the Indian Wells Masters. There has been no confirmation about who the 17-time Grand Slam champion will play in the exhibition match.
The venue of the match, Plaza Mexico, is the world’s largest bullring with a seating capacity of 41,262. The venue has hosted other sporting events in the past which include boxing and the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour.
If the announcement is confirmed by Federer, it will mean that the 34-year-old will not be playing in Switzerland’s first round match against Italy in the Davis Cup.
Federer hasn’t played a tournament in Mexico since his junior years. In 1996 he played in the 19th Casablanca Cup at the age of 15. In that tournament he won three qualifying rounds and a main draw match before losing in the second round.
There is yet to be any formal comment from Federer or any of his management team regarding the upcoming exhibition.
