Number 16 seed Jo Wilfred Tsonga rallied from a set down to edge past Tommy Robredo with 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-2 to get through to the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Master, the penultimate Master 1000 tournament of the year.
Tsonga, who won his first tournament of the season two weeks ago in Metz, failed to capitalize on four break point chances in the ninth game before dropping the first set on the 12th point at the tie-break with a forehand error. The 2008 Australian Open finalist played much better in the second set and got a double break in the fourth and eighth games to force the match to force the match to the third set. Tsonga broke serve in the first game of the third set but he broken back to love in the next game. Robredo dropped his serve twice more on his next two service games to 30 and to 15 respectively. Tsonga sealed the win with 6-2 in the third set setting up a second round against World number 66 Victor Estrella Burgos from the Dominican Republic. Tsonga could face Roger Federer in the third round.
