Top seed David Ferrer has withdrawn from the Valencia Open due to ongoing pain in his right elbow.

After grabbing his 26th ATP title in Vienna on Sunday, the world No.8 told the media that he is still experiencing pain in his elbow and it ‘is not 100%’. Ferrer has been plagued by elbow troubles during the second part of 2015. After participating in 50 consecutive Grand Slam main draws, the Spaniard withdrew from Wimbledon earlier this year due to the injury. After being sidelined from the tour for two months, Ferrer returned to action at the US Open. Despite his brief absence from the tour, Ferrer has won two ATP titles within the past month (Kuala Lumpur and Vienna).

During his press conference in Valencia, Ferrer said that decision to withdraw was a precautionary approach. He told the media that he didn’t want to aggravate the injury to his arm and risk spending more time away from the tour.

“It’s a major injury and I have to take care of it. It has already made me lose two-and-a-half months this summer. In the last four weeks I have played a lot and experienced some discomfort lately. When I got the injury at Roland Garros I thought it was nothing and now I learnt from that mistake”.  Ferrer said in his press conference.

The 33-year-old still hopes to play at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris next week, however, he is currently unsure if he will be able to participate. It is the first time that Ferrer hasn’t played at the Valencia Open since 2007. He has won the tournament twice in his career (2010 and 2012) and currently has a win-loss of 32-7 at the tournament.
