David Ferrer has gone out in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters following a 6-4, 6-2, loss to Australia’s Bernard Tomic.
The seventh seed entered the tournament in good shape after recently claiming his 25th ATP title in Malaysia and reaching the semi-final stage in last week’s China Open.
Despite the recent surge in his form, Ferrer was blown away at the start of the match as Tomic broke the world No.8 two consecutive times to lead 4-0. After the slow start Ferrer managed to claw his way back into the match by finally holding his serve and breaking Tomic for the first time of the match to move to just one game behind the Austrailian at 5-4. Despite the mini comeback Ferrer was unable to draw the opening set as Tomic took it by serving it out to love.
After dropping the opening set, Ferrer found himself in more trouble at the start of the second. Identical to the start, Tomic broke immediately to ease ahead. Ferrer was unable to respond to Tomic during the match as the Australian broke for a fourth time to lead by a set and 4-1. The seventh seed was still displaying his fighting spirit despite trailing to Tomic. During a lengthy fifth game Ferrer had five opportunities to break Tomic but failed to convert any of them as the World No.20 cruise to take the match after an hour and thirteen minutes.
The victory in Shanghai is the second time that Tomic has beaten the Spaniard this year. The first was at the Indian Wells Masters in March. Throughout the match Tomic produced 8 aces, 24 winners and 13 unforced errors. In comparison a frustrated Ferrer produced 4 aces, 16 winners and 23 unforced errors. The biggest issue for Ferrer was his failure to break Tomic’s serve. Out of nine chances, he only succeeded on one occasion.
In the next round Tomic will play either Richard Gasquet or Vasek Pospisil.
