As the 2015 season approaches its climax Andy Murray still has a lot of work ahead of him. The world No.2, who is currently playing at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, has the upcoming ATP World Tour finals in November followed by Great Britain’s Davis Cup final against Belgium. Despite his busy end to 2015, Murray has spoken about his plans next year.
Murray and his wife, Kim, are expecting the birth of their first child in February. Murray has already adjusted his off season schedule to be with Kim by skipping his annual Miami training camp to stay nearer to home. Murray will then travel to Australia in the build up for the first Grand Slam of 2016. Murray has confirmed to the Daily Mail what he will do after the Australian Open and when he hopes to return back to action.
‘The plan is to play my first match [back] in Davis Cup against Japan, but I’m definitely not going to play any tournaments between Australia and then. Depending on the date of the birth, I may not be able to play the Davis Cup either, but that’s my current plan.’ Murray said.
Murray has been an instrumental part of the British Davis Cup team this year as they reached their first Davis Cup final since 1978. If Great Britain is successful in their final against Belgium, it will be the first time the country has won the prestigious title since 1936. The British No.1 has, however cast doubts regarding potentially participating in all tie’s during the Davis Cup next year.
‘The plan is to play the first match [against Japan] and assess it after that. We could lose the first Davis Cup match and then it’s not an issue. If we win the match, get an away tie and play on clay again, it could be tricky. But all the players are in the exact same position next year. It will be interesting to see what everybody does”. He said.
One of the key events for the Brit in 2016 will be the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Murray is the defending champion and will be bidding to become the first male tennis player in Olympic history to win back-to-back gold medals in the games.
“For me, the Olympics is the biggest event that I’ll play in my career. Having competed in a couple of them, and knowing how I felt after losing in Beijing, how I felt after winning in London, I know pretty much where that is for me and where that stands for me”. He told The Daily Mail.
Murray is hoping to finish the year ranked second in the world which will be the highest year-end ranking in his career. Murray’s previous best was third in 2012. Last year he finished the season sixth.
