American number 1, John Isner,  began his US Open campaign in impressive form with a 6-2,6-3,6-4 win against Malek Jaziri in the first round. Isner won 98% of his first service points (41/42) during the match which lasted an hour and 43 minutes.

Following his win, Isner attended the regular after-match press conference where he was greeted by women’s 4th seed Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki was waiting for her press conference following her first round win.  The 2014 US Open finalist was in a playful mood as she joked about Isner’s timekeeping.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Just because you have been playing really well leading up to the US Open, you’re close to the top 10 again, doesn’t mean that you should push my press conference out. I would appreciate being you being on time?

JOHN ISNER: Now that I’m close to the top 10, Caroline is actually talking to me again. When I was ranked like 90 she would walk right by me. If I could get in single digits I think I can get some of Caroline’s attention. That’s my goal.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I was standing in the hallway and you walked straight past me.

JOHN ISNER: I didn’t see you.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: He says, I didn’t see you. It happens twice in a row and I said, Well, then look down.

JOHN ISNER: I have to get into single digits. This is my incentive. Caroline talks to me if I get into single digits.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Will you be on time then?

JOHN ISNER: Yes, I apologize. That’s my bad.

The two also confirmed that Isner turned down an offer to play in the mixed doubles with Wozniacki at the Australian Open earlier this year. The American joked that he is ‘too old‘ and he needs to focus on the singles (Isner is 30-years-old).

In the second round Isner will play Mikhail Youzhny. The American has never beaten Youzhny, however, their most recent meeting was in 2010.
