Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the upcoming China Open due to a forearm injury which she sustained this week.
The world No.3 returned to action this week at the Wuhan Open after being sidelined from the tour since Wimbledon due to a leg injury. During her second round match against Czech republic’s Barbora Strycova, the Russian was forced to pull out at the start of the final set. Shortly after her retirement, She spoke about the pain in her forearm.
“I got pain in my left forearm. It just got worse and worse as I continued,” said Sharapova.
“I just don’t think it’s smart to continue trying to run around the court and trying to hit forehands from the backhand side and compensate other things”.
The news was confirmed by the official WTA Insider Twitter account. It is understood that Sharapova’s main focus will be Russia’s upcoming Fed Cup final tie against the Czech Republic and the year-end finals.
Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the China Open. Not surprising given her prioritization of Singapore and Fed Cup.

The injury-plagued 28-year-old hasn’t played a full match on the tour since the Wimbledon semifinals where she lost in straight sets to Serena Williams.
