
Switzerland leads 2-0 against the Netherlands at the Palaexpo in Geneva, thanks to the wins of Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer. Wawrinka had to dig deep to edge past Thiemo De Bakker 2-6 6-3 4-6 6-3 7-5 in a hard-fought three-hour and nine-minute opening match. De Bakker went up 4-0 en route to cruising a 6-2 win in the first set. Wawrinka bounced back in the second set and broke serve at 4-3 en route to winning the second set with 6-3. De Bakker broke serve at 5-4 in the third set to win the third set.
With a 2-1 lead in the first three sets De Bakker went up a break to open up a 3-0 lead in the fourth set. Wawrinka fought back reeling off eight games in a row to win the fourth set with 6-3 and take a 2-0 lead in the fifth set. De Bakker drew level to 3-3 but Wawrinka got the decisive break in the 12th game to secure the victory for Switzerland.
After Wawrinka Roger Federer, runner-up to Novak Djokovic in last week’s US Open final in New York, secured the comfortable 2-0 lead for the defending champions with a 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over Jesse Huta Galung after an hour and 42 minutes. Federer broke serve at 3-3 in the first set en route to winning the first set with 6-3. The Swiss Maestro needed one break to seal the second set with 6-4. In the third set, Federer had to save the only two break points of the match before getting a double break to seal a comfortable straight set win
