Anna Karolina Schmiedlova beat Camila Giorgi 6-4 6-3 in the final of the WTA Katowice Open to clinch the first title of her career
Giorgi, who upset Agniewska Radwanska in yesterday’s semifinal, broke serve in the opening game of the first set and went up 30-15 in the second game but Schmiedlova broke back.
Schmiedlova converted on her first break point to pull away to 4-1. Giorgi broke back in the seventh game but she committed a double fault and dropped again her serve. Giorgi recovered the break on her third chance in the next game. At 4-5 the Italian faced three consecutive break points after another double fault. Giorgi saved the first two but she dropped her serve on the third opportunity when she set her backhand into the net. Schmiedlova sealed the first set with 6-4.
Giorgi opened up a 3-1 lead after saving two break points at 2-1. Schmiedlova fought back from a 1-3 deficit before breaking back in the sixth game. At 4-3 Schmiedlova broke again after Giorgi committed two double faults before holding her serve to love to take the second set with 6-3. Schmiedlova lifted her first title after losing the final in Rio de Janeiro against Sara Errani.
Giorgi lost her third career final after losing last year to Alizé Cornet in Katowice (after failing to convert on a match point) and to Karolina Pliskova in Linz last year.
“I started out nervous today. I lost my serve straight off in the first game. Then it was better. I wasn’t nervous after that and was just taking point by point”, said Schmiedlova.
“Last year I won my first WTA main draw match here. This year I won my first WTA title here, so I definitely want to come back. Hopefully I will be back”
