TENNIS WTA BEIJING – Petra Kvitova beat local favourite Peng Shuai (now the best Chinese player since the retirement of Li Na) with 6-4 6-2 to set up a third round match against Venus Williams which is expected to be another hard-fought battle after their exciting three-set third round match at Wimbledon last July. This year’s Wimbledon and Wuhan champion Petra Kvitova went down 0-2 in the first set but she fought back reeling off 12 of the next 16 games, dropping just nine points in her next eight service games. The Czech player, who secured her spot in the WTA Finals at Singapore by winning the Wuhan title, will face Venus Williams in a re-match of this year’s Wimbledon third round clash where Kvitova was just two points from losing the match when she went down 5-7 4-5 but she fought back to take a dramatic win with 5-7 7-6 7-5. Kvitova went on to win her second Wimbledon title moving up from Number 16 to Number 4 in the Road to Singapore Ranking.

Kvitova won four of her five matches against Venus but all their five matches went to the third set. Their last three matches were decided by the tie-break in the third set.

“Every match I have played with Venus has been a great fight until the end”, said Kvitova.

Venus beat Caroline Garcia 6-4 6-3 in a re-match of last week’s match in Wuhan where the French player won in a thrilling three-set match.

In the other top-match of the day Sam Stosur knocked out this year’s US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets with 6-4 7-6 (11-9). The Australian player got the break in the seventh game en route to clinching the first set. Stosur lost a break lead in the second set before saving five set points in the second-set tie-break (where Wozniacki committed three double faults) to wrap up the match with a very tight 11-9. Stosur set up a third round match against Alizé Cornet who cruised past Lauren Davis with 6-2 6-1.

Maria Sharapova looked like she was going to take a easy win over Carla Suarez Navarro after wnning the first set 6-1 but the Spanish player made a late recovery in the second set which came down to the tie-break. Sharapova went up 6-1 5-4 and served for the match but Suarez Navarro clawed her way back winning the next two games to take the lead with 6-5 and forced the second set to the tie-break. Sharapova converted only one of her nine break point chances during the second set but she clinched it at the tie-break with 7-3. Maria will play against either Angelique Kerber or Svetlana Kuznetsova
