TENNIS WTA TOKYO – In the quarter finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, a WTA Premier tournament, this year’s US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki beat Carla Suarez Navarro with a double 6-3 confirming her recent good shape. Diego Sampaolo
Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the semifinal with a 6.3 6-3 win over Carla Suarez Navarro. The Spanish player could not hold her serve during the first set. Wozniacki got a double break before closing out the match in one hour and 36 minutes in the second set.
In Thursday’s match against Jarmila Gajdosova Wozniacki fought back from a set down to win the match in three sets with 4-6 7-5 6-3.
“I played a little better than I did yesterday. We had a lot of long rallies. It was definitely a long ride there. I was trying to stay patient out there because Carla is a player who uses the angles really well and she runs a lot of balls down. I knew it was not going to be easy and I’d have to wait for the right opportunity to go for my shots”, said Wozniacki
The other Spanish player Garbine Muguruza who advanced to the second set Garbine Muguruza fought back from a set down to edge Australia’s Casey Dellacqua. World number 26 player Muguruza went down a set an a break at the start of the second set. Muguruza, who reached the quarter final this year at the Roland Garros, won the tie-break on the second set point before clinching the third set in almost two hours to set up a semifinal against Wozniacki.
Yesterday Muguruza rallied from a break down to beat Jelena Jankovic 7-6 6-4 in two sets.
Angelique Kerber dropped just three games to beat number six seed and this year’s Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova.
World Number 10 player Ana Ivanovic won a easy match against Lucie Safarova with 6-3 6.2 to set up a semifinal match against Kerber. With this win Ivanovic broke a five-match losing streak against Safarova. Ivanovic broke serve with a backhand return before getting a double break a few games later to take full control of the opening set. The Serbian player closed out the first set with two aces before taking a double break in the second set to wrap it up with a 6-3 6-2 win.
