Vinci and Radwanska traded breaks in the first three games of the opening set. Vinci got a second break at 3-3. Radwanska came close to dropping serve again when she was 3-5 down but she managed to save the break point chance. Vinci won the next two game to clinch the first set. Both players traded breaks in the first games of the second set until 3-3. Vinci got the decisive break in the seventh game for 4-3 before saving two break-back point chances. Vinci held the final game to love to wrap up the match.
Serena Williams eased past Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets with 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 12 minutes with a break in the eighth game of the second set the day after recovering from a 5-0 deficit against Silvia Soler Espinosa in the first round match. Serena was pushed to the third set in both previous matches head-to-head against Pironkova.
Serena’s sister Venus took a re-match against France’s Caroline Garcia, who beat her last week in Wuhan in the tie-break of the third set, with a 6-4 6-3 win.
Carla Suarez Navarro overcame this year’s Indian Wells champion Flavia Pennetta in three sets with 6-1 3-6 6-2. Suarez Navarro did not face a break point chance to cruise to a easy 6-1 in the first set. Pennetta fought back from 1-3 down to reel off five games in a row to draw level on sets with 6-3. The Spanish player did not face a break point chance in the third set to dominate the third set with 6-2.
Maria Sharapova also won in straight sets over Ukrainian rising star Elina Svitolina (semifinalist in Wuhan) with a double 6-2
Sabine Lisicki easily beat this year’s Wimbledon and Wuhan finalist Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 6-4
