Roger Federer came back from two sets down and saved match points to Gael Monfils before closing 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 6-2 and advance to the semi-finals.
It was a difficult moment for the Swiss champion, questing for his 18th slam title, but he came out on top of it, showing great physical and mental strength.
“It was one of those moments where you got the back against the wall and hope to get a bit lucky,” he said. “You hope to play exactly the right shots that you need or that he completely just messes it up.
“Either way works as long as you get out of it. But clearly it’s not a great feeling, because you feel it’s not in your control anymore really. So I’m very, very happy to have found a way tonight.”
He showed all his class to come out of it by changing his tactics and taking the net more and more often, making this one of the best matches played in the tournament so far.
“I have won other big ones in other places. But over best of five, saving match points against Gaël in an atmosphere that it was out here tonight, it’s definitely very special.
“I’m not sure I have ever saved match point before in a slam. If that hasn’t happened, I’m unbelievably happy that it was today, because I knew I could play better after the first couple of sets. I believed I could turn it around from the get-go when the third set started.”
It was not easy for Monfils to accept a loss after having had match points, but the Frenchmen did not hold back on the merits of his opponent.
“When you have match point and I had easy forehand, maybe that. But I think was cool. Then I think, you know, what happened in the fifth is more that during the match I was focused like from the first point to the fifth, and then sort of I have a little drop.
“Sometimes, as I told to you, to keep my emotion is fatigue me a little bit. It’ tough to handle it. And then it’s a matter of five minutes. You know, I think I was down five minutes. Roger just jump on me. I think I gave my best. Simply Roger was too good at the end. You know, it’s okay.
“I need a bit of time to forget this, but then, you know, it give me more motivation.
“At the beginning I feel good, because when you have a tactic or plan, a game plan, stick with. That’s why he’s Roger Federer, because he change so many times. He start with chipping very low. I think I handled it good. So then he stick with longer points. It was 50-50, and then he try to come to the net like very often. It was a bit better for him.
“Then suddenly he start to mix everything. You know, that’s why he’s the greatest player, because he can do everything. You know, he just feel good. The answer is he feel good.”
Four years after Australian Open 2010, Marin Cilic is back to a slam semi-final after defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets 6-2 6-4 7-6.
The Croat played a very good match, taking advantage of a nervous opponent.
“Yeah, it was a great performance today,” he said. “I would say. Was very tricky with the conditions. Very gusty. I mean, for both of us. We are big guys. Not easy to deal with the wind and with, I mean, the ball moving in the air.”
The 25-year-old could not play last year’s edition of the US Open following a doping ban for inadvertently ingesting nikethamide through a tablet, that he had no intention to use for enhancing his performance. (The substance is banned only during the season, but not in the offseason.)
“I was back in Croatia and I was training,” he admitted. “I was preparing for a time when I’m going to play. Definitely, I mean, it was a difficult period. I didn’t know when I’m going to start back.
“But was also good period for me. I matured a bit more and I was working day after day. I wasn’t, you know, relaxing and doing nothing. So I think that helped me to improve physically.
“It angered me how all the process went because it was not fair to me. It wouldn’t be fair to any tennis player. When I came back to tennis court I erased it from my memory. I just used the positive parts, which, you know, made me tougher.”
