TENNIS WIMBLEDON 2014 – Roger Federer recovered from a set down to edge his compatriot and friend Stan Wawrinka in four sets with the scoreline of 3-6 7-6 6-4 6-4 in the first ever all-Swiss derby at the All England Club to book his berth in the semifinal. Wawrinka hit ten winners to clinch the opening set in 30 minutes. It was the first time that Federer dropped a set in this tournament. He was broken for the first time this year at Wimbledon.

At 2.1 Federer got two break points but Wawrinka saved them and managed to hold serve for 2-2. There were no breaks in the second set which went down to the tie-break where Federer won three consecutive points to pull away to 6-3 before wrapping up the second set tie-break with 7-5 to draw level the match.

Federer got a crucial break in the seventh game of the third set to take a 4-3 edge and pulled away to 5-3 in the next game before wrapping it up to go up 2-1 on sets to the delight of spectators. Wawrinka went down a break early in the fourth set for 1-2 but he fended off four match points as Federer was serving for the match The Lausanne player wasted a break-back point before Federer sealed the win with a smash on the first match point in two hours and 33 minutes.

Federer hit 10 aces and won 79 percent of first serve points, He hit 46 winners to 14 unforced errors. Stan hit 51 winners but he committed 24 unforced errors.

Federer bounced back from his shock defeat against Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round last year. He clinched his 14th win in 16 head.to.head matches against Wawrinka who beat in this year’s Monte-Carlo final

“I am just really pleased that I am back that I am back strong at Wimbledon. Last year I was very deflated leaving Wimbledon after the second round.I am happy to be back in the semis, The prospect is very exciting”, said Federer.

“There was a lot on the line today playing against Stan. Quarters show the direction on how you are playing and all these things.

“It’s tough playing against Stan. I must admit he played a great first two sets. I had to wait two and a half sets to get the first break, He is hard to bet by because we know each other’s patterns really well. We really played at a high level.

Federer set up a eagerly awaited semifinal against Canadian young star Milos Raonic who beat Australian sensation Nick Kyrgios who upset twice Wimbledon champion Rafa Nadal yesterday in the quarter final. Novak Djokovic, who beat Marin Cilic in five sets, will clash against Grigor Dimitrov who knocked out last year Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in three sets.
