TENNIS – Roger Federer was unstoppable in his fourth round match at the Sony Open in Miami against Frenchman Richard Gasquet where he dropped just three games to win 6-1 6-2 in just 49 minutes. Federer has reached his ninth Miami quarter final in a tournament where he won two titles. Diego Sampaolo
Roger Federer produced another superb match in which he broke serve five times, hit six aces and lost just eight points on his serve to win for the 12th time in 14 head-to-head matches against Gasquet. In his first three matches in Key Biscayne he lost just 18 points on serve and faced only one break point.
Gasquet started well winning the opening game but Federer broke serve in the third game. He held serve with a service winner on the break-back point. Federer created a break point with a forehand winner before Gasquet dropped his serve with a double fault. Federer clinched the first set with 6-1 in just 25 minutes before breaking serve for 4-2 in the second set. He got another break to close out the match in less than 50 minutes.
Federer will now clash against Kei Nishikori who won a thrilling match against David Ferrer in three sets with 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 7-6 (11-9). The Japanese player won a dramatic tie-break in the third set after fending off four match points against lat year’s finalist Ferrer. Nishikori converted five of his 13 break point chances to score his first win over Ferrer since the 2012 Olympic Games at Wimbledon.
Nishikori has qualified for the Miami quarter final for the fourth time in his career. The quarter final will be a re-match of last year in Madrid where Nishikori beat Federer.
