A routine win over Haase advances Federer to the Rogers Cup final where he will meet a "NextGen" representative

A slight rain delay postponing the players’ entrance by 10 minutes and a witty retort by Robin Haase to a fan’s cheer are probably the only two episodes that diverted from the expected script for the first semifinal of the Rogers Cup in Montreal Saturday afternoon. Roger Federer has always been in the lead, holding serve in the opening game of the match and then spearheading a sequence of three consecutive breaks, the only ones in the afternoon, that put him firmly in the lead with a commanding 4-1. After an “energy efficient” start, Federer shifts gear and engages the cruise control to close out the set by 6-3.

The serve is the law during the second set, especially for Federer, who loses only three points on 31 on his serve, and never looks one bit under pressure. A very funny episode in the middle of the set amuses the capacity crowd: as one spectator screams “Come on Roger”, Haase loudly responds “My name is Robin!”. There was never the feeling that the match could turn and escape Federer’s hands, even when the Swiss shoddily squandered a two-minibreak advantage in the second set tie break with two unforced errors, allowing Haase to come back from 1-4 to 5-4. Two big serves by Federer and a shanked forehand by the Dutchman and it was final n. 45 in a Masters 1000 for the Swiss.

“Serve was not always consistent this week” explained Federer during the press conference “I have served well in patches, but this is not what I want from me. So I am happy that I have been able to perform well with this shot today”. The other two semifinalists have a combined age very close to Federer’s (38 against 36): “It’s great to see young players at this stage of a top-tier ATP tournament, this is great for tennis. You don’t know what to expect when you play someone that young, they don’t know, their team doesn’t know. Anyway, that is a great opportunity for them, it’s very exciting”.
