There were no signs of regrets or despair from Angelique Kerber after she missed out on a gold medal at the Rio Olympics on Saturday night.

The world No.2 was unable to find a way to get past an inspired Monica Puig, who clinched the match in three sets to win Puerto Rico’s first ever gold medal in Olympic history. Whatever Kerber did in the match, her 22-year-old opponent has the answer with an impressive 54 winners.

Despite missing out on the chance of becoming the first German player to win a gold medal since Steffi Graf in 1988, Kerber’s silver medal is no less significant to her after what has been a breakthrough year on the tour.

“This is certainly the best year of my career.” Kerber proudly stated in an interview with German media.
“I won a grand slam, that was a dream come true. I won a (Olympic) medal, another dream come true and I’ve been to the Wimbledon final and played a good match against Serena Williams.”

The entire Olympic experience is one that Kerber has said she will never forget. Describing her participation in the event as a ‘huge honour’, the German has insisted that she has given all she had in Rio to return home with a silver medal.

“I tried to leave my heart on the court and I am very proud of my performance.” The 28-year-old said.
“It’s a huge honour to represent Germany at the Olympics. I was something very special, special moments, something I’ll never forget. I’m very proud of winning the silver medal.”

Within the past 12 months Kerber has won the Australian Open, clinched two WTA titles and climbed over 12 places to world No.2. Life on the tour is certainly enjoyable for the 28-year-old, who currently has a win-loss of 43-13 this season. Now approaching the US Open, Kerber is finally closing in on the elusive world No.1 position.

“The year isn’t over yet, I have one Grand Slam left and I hope the year continues well.” She said.

As Serena Williams display signs of finally faltering at the top of the rankings, Kerber is bidding to become the first player to replace Williams at the top of the ranking since Victoria Azarenka in February 2013. Kerber could play the American next week if both women progress to the final at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
