"Excalibur", the book: tennis and life of Sara Errani
TENNIS – Italian tennis star Sara Errani presented “Excalibur”, a book written by tennis journalist and former Ubitennis contributor Roberto Commentucci during a nice evening held in the Yard Club in the centre of Milan. The evening was organized by Sara’s brother and manager Davide Errani. “Tennis is fight and enjoyment at its purest form” is the sentence Errani uses to launch the book. Diego Sampaolo
“Excalibur” written by Roberto Commentucci with the foreword by Eurosport journalist Federico Ferrero looks back to the last two exciting years in the career of the 2012 Roland Garros finalist. That year marked an exciting breakthrough in the career of Sara Errani who started 2012 as the World Number 45 and rpse to the top-ten after reaching the first Grand Slam final of her year at the Roland Garros.
“Excalibur” is not only a profile on Sara’s career but also offers a picture of her personal life through five boxes where Sara wrote about her family, her passions and her close friends.
The book was born quite by chance with the idea to create a collection of photos, then Commentucci came to the idea to transform this idea into a real book
“The idea to write a book on my last two years came to mind for the first time some years ago when my father began collecting some photos. It is not a biography but a book on the two most exciting years of my career. This book was the best way to remember the two last years of my career. In the future I would like to write my biography but there is plenty of time to do that in the future”.
Excalibur is the name given to her raquet which has changed her career. The new Babolat raquet was a turning point which helped her make the decisive step forward.
“I will no longer leave the raquet for the rest of my career. I had never had a similar feeling. I felt unbeatable. It seemed that I had the magic sword. It was like the sword of King Arthur and I called my raquet Excalibur. With the new raquet I felt I had a new gear. I had more power” said Errani.
Errani started playing tennis at a very young age and spent nine month at the famous Bollettieri Academy at Bradenton in Florida when she was just 12. She became the best Under 18 player when she was 15 years old.
“I decided to go to the Bollettieri Academy at the age of 12. It was a great experience which contributed to my growth”.
At the age of 17 Sara moved to Valencia to be trained by Pablo Lozano, who is not only her coach but an important person in her life and career.
“Pablo has had a major influence on my career. We met for the first time in Valencia when we were very young. He has always given me support and advice in the most important periods of my career”.
During the evening Errani talked about her special relationship to her brother and manager Davide, who introduced her to tennis and her first coach who made her fall in love with tennis and her friendship to Roberta Vinci. Davis Cup and Fed Cup captain Corrado Barazzutti was the first to realize the potential of this doubles team during a Fed Cup match in 2009 when Errani and Vinci teamed up for the first time
She has become professional since 2002. During her career she played in more than 50 singles and doubles WTA finals and won 30 titles. She reached her career-high in 2012 when she rose to World Number 5 in the WTA Ranking in 2012, the year in which she played the Roland Garros final, the US Open and the quarter final at the Australian Open. “Winning the semifinal at the 2012 Roland Garros against Sam Stosur gave me an unbelievable feeling. Before 2012 the Roland Garros had never been very successful for me”
This year she has achieved the Career Grand Slam in the doubles winning at Wimbledon together with her close friend Roberta Vinci. The triumph at Wimbledon followed their previous Grand Slam doubles wins at the Roland Garros and the US Open in 2012 and the Australian Open in 2013 and 2014. The Italian stars have become the sixth doubles team in history to achieve the Career Grand Slam. They also played three more finals at the Australian Open in 2012 and at the Roland Garros in 2013 and 2014. They won 20 WTA doubles titles
“Playing on grass has always been a challenge for me. I achieved a great result winning the doubles with Roberta at Wimbledon. Grass follows a hard season on clay and I am always physically tired after the Roland Garros. It is never easy to get used to grass in one week after the clay season. However, I feel that I have improved a lot on grass this year. playing at Eastbourne before Wimbledon has contributed to improving my level. I played well against Caroline Garcia in the first round despite the defeat”.
Through her results Sara Errani has become a role model for all young children who dream to follow her example and pursue a professional tennis career. She has showed that through hard hard work and determination everything is possible.
“I want to be a role model for children. I always try to be nice to everyone and be a positive example. I always receive congratulations and I appreciate that. I want to make my friends and family proud of my achiements”, said Errani.
An important factor in her career is her friendship to her doubles partner Roberta Vinci. “My relationship to Roberta began before we began playing the doubles together. We enjoyed ourselves and this is the most important thing. We support each other. We improved our game and changed it and managed to win at Wimbledon”.
After so many great achievements and a Career Grand Slam Sara has a lot of goals to achieve in the future. “Our goal is to win the Olympic gold medal in the doubles. Unfortunately we were unlucky to face Serena and Venus Williams in the quarter finals at London 2012. In the singles the goal is to continue fighting and doing my best as always. Tennis is fight and enjoyment at its purest form”.
Before the US hard-court campaign Errani and Vinci will be invited by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Rome who invited the Italian tennis stars to Palazzo Chigi in Rome after their Wimbledon triumph. “It does not happen every day that a Prime Minister invites you . This makes us proud and happy”, concluded Errani.
