Last year’s Davis Cup champion Roberto Bautista Agut called out the decision of the French Tennis Federation to postpone Roland Garros until September as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 31-year-old Spanish player said that the one-week gap between the US Open and French Open was too narrow considering that players would play on different surfaces.

“I don’t understand the unilater decision of Roland Garros to transfrer on the calendar to September. I don’t think it’s the best time, right after the US Open. It makes us change surfaces with little rest and after matches to five very demanding sets. I also don’t think it’s good that these kind of decisions are made without consulting the players ind unilaterelly”, said Bautista Agut.

The US Open also criticized French Open’s decision made without consulting the other tournaments. The organisers of the New York Grand Slam tournament are not planning to change the date of the US Open.

“When everyone is supposed to be working together, we recognize that it is not the best thing to make a unilateral decision like this one”, said US Open in a statement.
