LONDON: Former Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov has voiced his own views regarding Andy Murray’s split with coach Ivan Lendl.
The former world No.1 announced on Friday that he and Lendl has decided to part ways. In a statement published by Murray, he said that the split was done as a ‘mutual agreement.’ With Lendl later adding ‘I wish Andy well. We had a great run and a lot of fun.’ It is the second time that the two have gone their own ways. After a successful stint between 2012-2014, they reunited once again in 2016.
“We’ve had great success and learned a lot as a team. My focus now is on getting ready for Australia with the team I have in place and getting back to competing.” Said Murray.
Following his win over Pablo Carreno Busta at the ATP Finals on Friday, Dimitrov was asked about the latest development. He suggested that the separation may only be ‘temporary’ with the possibility of a reunion in the future. Murray has enjoyed some of his biggest success on the tour under Lendl’s guidence, but his recent offensive has been halted by injury.
“It’s not their first time splitting up anyways. Maybe it’s just a temporary thing. I don’t know what’s going on in his team.” Said Dimitrov.
Dimitrov, who is currently at a ranking best of sixth in the world, was also dismissive about the prospect of Murray potentially stealing his coach. The Bulgarian has been mentored by Dani Vallverdu since last year. Vallverdu has collaborated with Murray in the past and has known him since he was 15-years-old.
“I’m not worried. If you ask me if he’s going to take Dani, no.” He stated.
“Obviously I can wish him only the best. I hope he has a speedy recovery. I miss playing against him. I miss practicing against him.”
On Saturday Dimitrov will take on Jack Sock in the semifinals of the ATP Finals. As the first Bulgarian to play in the tournament, the 26-year-old topped the Pete Sampras with three consecutive wins. Against both David Goffin and Carreno Busta, he dropped only two games in each match.
Dimitrov’s semifinal against Sock will take place at 20:00 GMT on Saturday. The winner will play either Roger Federer or David Goffin.
