VIDEO: Venus Williams Surprises Her First Grade Teacher

Venus Williams has taken a walk down memory lane after returning to her old school to thank her first-ever teacher.

The former world No.1 returned to Mark Twain Elementary as part of a special campaign called ‘thank a teacher’ to mark Teacher Appreciation Month. The initiative is organised by The California Lottery, who gave $1.5 Bn to state public schools in 2016. In the video Williams surprises her first grade teacher, Ms Vellegas.

“I chose to come because I had an opportunity to make a connection I haven’t had for 30 years.” Said Williams.

During the heartfelt two-and-a-half minute clip, the 36-year-old praised the influence Vellegas had on her. The teacher has taught at Mark Twain for 34 years and had williams as a pupil between 1986-1987.

“I remember I felt inspired, I felt nourished. The care that she takes with each student. You can tell there is love in her heart.” She said of her former teacher.

Williams resided in California until the sixth grade before moving to Florida to attend Rick Macci’s tennis academy along with her sister. The video of the emotional encounter can be seen below.
