David Goffin beats Dominic Thiem in three sets to reach the quarter finals in Monte-Carlo
David Goffin saw off Dominic Thiem 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-3 in one of the most interesting third-round matches to reach the quarter finals at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.
Goffin converted his third break point in the third game of the opening set to take a 2-1 lead. Thiem broke straight back in the next game to draw level to 2-2. Thiem got another break in the sixth game to open up a 5-2 lead earning a set point. Goffin reeled off three consecutive games including a break- back in the ninth game at deuce to draw level to 5-5. Both players held their next two service games en route to the tie-break. Goffin opened up a 6-2 lead in the tie-break earning four set points. Thiem saved the first two set points but Goffin sealed the first set on his third opportunity.
Thiem got his only break in the first game and held his serve in the next games and sealed the second set on his first set point. The young Austrian player saved two break points in the fourth game.
Thiem held serve in the second game of the decider after saving a break point. He broke serve to 30 in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Goffin broke straight back to 15 to draw level to 3-3 and broke serve to love in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead. The Belgian player served out for the match to 15 in the next game.
Goffin now leads 6-3 in his head-to-head matches against Thiem and 2-0 in this year’s matches. Goffin beat Thiem in four sets in the Round of 16 at last January’s Australian Open.
